DAY BY DAY WITH JESUS
Sunday, January 18

Scripture: Luke 22:39–46

Meditation: Travailing in Prayer

When your heart is heavy and overwhelmed by the burdens of life, what do you do? The divine counsel from this passage is to do exactly what Jesus did—He went to Gethsemane to pray. Jesus did not pray only in times of crisis; prayer was a regular and essential part of His life.

He also encouraged His disciples to pray. “Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, ‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation’” (Luke 22:39–40). Our spiritual victory begins on our knees. Prayer is our source of strength and deliverance. It brings us into God’s awesome presence in total surrender.

When you are confronted with the temptation to sin or deny God, pray, and you will gain the spiritual stamina to resist the devil and overcome. The Lord Jesus agonized in prayer. He was sincere, yet completely submissive. “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done’” (Luke 22:41–42).

The cup symbolizes suffering and judgment—the physical and emotional pain, including the momentary separation from the Father, as Jesus bore God’s wrath against the sins of humanity. The thought of the cross was overwhelming, yet Jesus prayed and received divine strength to do the will of the Father.
“An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” (Luke 22:43–44). Prayer strengthens us to do God’s will. Therefore, when your heart is overwhelmed, do not give up or become discouraged; travail in prayer until you prevail. God answers the prayers of His children.

When Jesus returned to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from sorrow. Yet He charged them again to pray. “When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ‘Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation’” (Luke 22:45–46).

We have no excuse not to pray. Are you weary emotionally? Pray! Victory abounds when we travail before God in prayer.

Pause and ponder:
“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission” (Hebrews 5:7).

Reflection Question
When my heart is overwhelmed by pressure or temptation, do I turn first to prayer as Jesus did, or do I try to handle life’s battles in my own strength?

Striking Point
Victory abounds when we travail before God in prayer.

Prayer Focus
Gracious Father, grant us spiritual stamina to resist temptation and to stand firm in trials. Just as You strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane, strengthen us by Your Spirit whenever we feel weak or weary. Teach us to travail in prayer until we receive the courage and grace to do Your will.
In Jesus’ matchless name, Amen.
